Rennes is the prefecture of the Brittany region, in the east of Brittany at the confluence of the Ille and the Vilaine. For centuries it was the parliamentary city of the province, as its 17th-century Parliament's Palace shows. After the fire of 1720, its medieval timber centre was partly rebuilt in stone.
